Auto Repair Shop Work Order & Invoicing System
Overview
Zang Auto is a web-based work order and invoicing system built to help auto repair shops organize customer and vehicle information, manage repair jobs, record labor and parts, and prepare professional service invoices.
The system brings key workshop records together in one place, helping reduce repetitive data entry and keep repair and payment information organized. It is built with Django and can be accessed through a web browser.

Key Features
Customer and Vehicle Records
Keep customer details and their associated vehicles organized. Search existing customers by name or email, and maintain vehicle information such as VIN, license plate, year, make, model, odometer, registration expiry, and insurance details.
Work Order Management
Create a work order through a guided workflow: select or add a customer, select or add a vehicle, and then enter the repair details. Update work orders as the job progresses.
Labor and Parts
Add labor tasks and parts to a work order using reusable catalogs. Labor totals are calculated from hours and rates, while parts totals are calculated from quantity and cost.
Pennsylvania Registration Scanning
Reduce manual entry by importing information from supported Pennsylvania vehicle registrations. The system supports compatible PDF417 barcode scanners in keyboard-wedge mode, as well as registration PDF/image uploads. Extracted information can be used to prefill customer and vehicle fields for review.
Scanning results depend on the document, barcode quality, and supported registration format. Review the extracted information before saving it.
Printable Service Invoices
Generate a printable Master Service Invoice containing customer and vehicle details, labor and parts, applicable charges, totals, and relevant inspection information. A separate labor-only invoice is also available. Invoices can be sent by email through the configured email service.
Inspection and Vehicle Measurements
Record inspection and anti-tampering information where applicable. Work orders can also include vehicle measurements and condition details for areas such as brakes, tires, drums, and suspension.
Payments and Service History
Record multiple payments against a work order, including cash, card, and check. Keep work orders and service records associated with customers and vehicles for future reference.
User Access and Security
The application includes user accounts, password reset, and optional two-factor authentication using an authenticator app or email code. Administrative capabilities are restricted to authorized superusers.
How It Works
- Find or add a customer. Search existing records or create a customer profile.
- Select or add a vehicle. Choose a vehicle associated with the customer, or enter its details. Supported registration scanning can help prefill available information.
- Create the work order. Add labor, parts, measurements, inspection details, and comments as needed.
- Review charges and payments. Check calculated totals and record payments.
- Generate the invoice. Produce a printable service invoice and email it when required.

- Backend: Django 5.2 / Python
- Frontend: Tailwind CSS, DaisyUI, and AJAX-style interactions
- Database: SQLite or PostgreSQL
- PDF invoices: WeasyPrint
- Registration decoding: zxing-cpp and OpenCV, with PDF text extraction fallback
- Authentication: Custom Django user model with optional two-factor authentication
Project Scope
This project demonstrates the design and development of a practical business application that combines customer records, vehicle data, repair work orders, invoice generation, payment tracking, and document data extraction in one workflow.
The system is tailored to the documented workshop workflow and Pennsylvania registration format. Other locations, registration formats, integrations, or business-specific processes may require additional configuration or development.
